My Top 10 FPS Games Of All Time
Honourable Mentions
007: Nightfire (PS2)
Quite possibly the first FPS game I ever played, I’m sad that I missed GoldenEye 64.I loved having so much spy gear at my disposal and so many familiar characters to play against as bots. i played this game on the PC originally, but have repurchased it on the best console of the sixth generation. Nightfire is basically just nostalgia for me at this point, but it was damn good in it’s day.
Bulletstorm (PS3)
Bulletstorm is a lot of fun. The skill kills add flare to an otherwise dying genre and the alternate firing really call for some brutal kills. The story leaves a lot to be desired, but the gameplay is impeccable. Bulletstorm has a lot of charm and is a fantastic game. However, it always ends up on the outskirts of my lists, I felt it would be good to give it an honourable mention this time around.
XIII (PS2)
The comic shooter. XIII isn’t amazing, and that’s why it sits here on the outside looking in. Even though XIII isn’t great, it’s really cool. The style hasn’t been replicated anywhere to my knowledge and it’s a real hidden gem. If you haven’t played XIII I recommend you give it a go just to admire it. Truly before its time.
The Top Ten
Rage (PS3)
Coming in at number ten is an open-world roamer/FPS/RPG blend, Rage has a lot on it’s plate. With amazing voice acting and beautiful landscapes, Rage does a stellar job of creating it’s setting. Every aspect of the game is done well, but none of it is quite as outstanding as the visuals. A really crazy mutant-killing, ATV driving package.
Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360)
Possibly featuring some of the most ‘Oh Shit!’ moments ever in a video game, Left 4 Dead 2 can be bloody terrifying. The game can also be played in four player co-op which can make way for some crazy situations. Hearing the whimpers of a witch can be one of the scariest thins in gaming today.
Resistance 3 (PS3)
Resistance: Fall of Man is the better Resistance, but Resistance 3 is the better FPS. The guns feel solid, and there’s a whole plethora of new weapons to try. The Bullseye is back from the previous titles that can lock onto your enemies and empty entire rounds into their flesh. The game also features new guns like the Atomizer that reduces your enemies to mush. Resistance 3 has beautiful yet bleak visuals too and really creates the feeling of a lost world.
Fallout 3 (PS3)
Another RPG with FPS elements, Fallout 3 is a masterpiece, and much more than your standard FPS. The VATS mode allows for precision shooting, making a more strategic impression on firing your weapon. It’s a really cool game and I’m sure you’ve played it if you’re a gamer of any sort whatsoever.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3)
At the height of Call of Duty’s popularity lies this entry in the too-long franchise. Modern Warfare is damn good too. One of the first games I picked up for the seventh generation, CoD 4 featured fantastic maps, loads of different weapons and loadouts and an awesome campaign. Even though the series has fizzled as of late, this game will live on through a HD remaster later this year.
Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
My favourite Halo title. Halo 3 got me started with Halo and was so good that I went back and played the first two. The campaign was just so fun to play, especially in co-op. From driving around in Warthogs and Wraiths to obliterating aliens with the gravity hammer and energy sword, Halo 3 is one hell of a game, and to me, the best game in the entire series.
Unreal Tournament III (PS3)
So much blood! Unreal Tournament III is insane, and so enjoyable. You’ll be getting mega-kills, monster-kills and rampages before you know it as you press the up button to turn yourself into a gargantuan titan. UT3 is the ultimate vehicle combat game too, with modes such as vehicle capture the flag being some of the best game modes. You can read my full review of Unreal tournament III here.
Borderlands 2 (PS3)
This is the best game in the trilogy, but it’s damn close between 1 & 2. The pre-sequel failed to live up to expectations but is still solid. The second game has so much content and such a smooth design and just flows seamlessly. Time disappears when you’re playing this game and with good reason, time flies when you’re having fun. Make sure to play this with a friend because you’ll get the most out of it that way.
BioShock (PS3)
What a game. BioShock combines first-person shooting with magic and a really creepy and sinister underworld. It won many awards during it’s day and is still renowned across the world for it’s amazing graphics and gameplay and renowned across the universe for it’s exciting plot and story. For my full review of the original BioShock click here.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (PS2)
A game that is always topping my lists. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is my favourite first-person shooter ever made. The single player is just as much fun as the multiplayer and it’s such a good laugh. There’s a map maker as well as loads of different game modes and challenges as well as an entire league to unlock a tonne of characters to play as and with.
