Battleborn Open Beta Review
Have you ever ordered anything from an infomercial only to find out it is nothing like what was advertised. Maybe it even still works for something, it just wasn’t what you were expecting. It almost seems like they didn’t want you to know what the product actually was. This is how I describe Battleborn. Battleborn was advertised as an intense first person shooter. It looked very similar to Team fortress 2 when I looked at screenshots at gameplay. However, when I got into the open beta and into my first map I found myself trapped. I WAS IN A MOBA! This was not extremely bad news for me since I love playing Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends; however, it was extremely surprising.
Battleborn online is played 5v5 and your team can only have one of each hero. You push down the sentry units and win when you kill the last sentry. Does this sound like a first person shooter to you? It feels like a blend of Team Fortress 2 and Smite. But, Battleborn does feel like a better version of Smite. The First Person shooter aspect really makes you feel fully immersed in the gameplay.
Battleborn does also have a story mode. It appears that only the first two missions are available in the open beta, but, they are not in the MOBA style and much more in a First Person Shooter style. The story allows you to learn how to play the game while you unlock items and other heroes to play in the game. You are introduced to the surprisingly hilarious characters and their weird quirks. The scripting in the storyline is so funny and the heroes lines are even funnier. The comedy used in Battleborn is perfect and everything I wish other games would do.
There are so many different weapons in the game. Many of the characters resemble other video games but you did not hear it from me. You can run around like master chief with the assault rifle, snipe people with C3PO, or send demons to bring your enemies closer with some creepy Heroes. Some of the abilities I have seen are crazy intense, and crazy awesome. There are even Heroes that are meant to absorb the damage (and maybe even reflect some back). Some of Battleborn Heroes are melee and some attack from way, way far away. However you like to play games, there will be a hero for you. That is one of the things that makes Battleborn the game that it is. The versatility of the Heroes.
There are many things that I already love about this game. The first thing is that you can play however you would like. Unlike classic MOBAs which only have around 4 classes, Battleborn has a plethora of classes. You can play as a tank (if being a massive target and being shot by everyone on the map at the same time is your style), a rogue ( if you love to hide in the shadows and pounce on the innocent heroes in the back), a healer (if being hated on is your favorite), an assassin ( if you are fond of snipers), or many other classes. There is so much to choose from. The combat in the game is also great. It brings the intensity of a cartoony game with the action of a first person shooter.
Battleborn’s open beta closed on Monday April 18th, but the game is available on May 3rd for purchase on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Because this game is coming from the makers of Borderlands’ series, I expect this will take off rather quickly. IF you preorder the game it comes with the firstborn pack. Due to the fact that most of the heroes need to be unlocked, this would be a huge advantage in the early stages of the game.
Now Battleborn still has a long way to go. Some heroes are fun and others are awful. Being a tank currently means being instakilled by every assassin on the map when you show up because you seriously are a massive target. The story mode has potential but we shall see where it goes. and some of the heroes need a little help. We also have only been able to look at one map for online play. We shall see where Battleborn ends up but right now it appears it is going to be a fantastic game. With a hero for every type of playing style, Battleborn is a game that I believe anyone can get into. With its fast and intense action and great comedy, I think it will be a great success. We shall see if the $60 price tag is too much for people looking to pick up this game when it’s released.
Overall 9/10

I'm the one who plays all the weird indie titles but is horrible with remembering names. Commonly found asking "Hey, did you guys play that one game that came out like a while ago with that weird character in it?".
