What is a Game Review Score really Worth?

The Kind of Charm You Chose to Ignore

In this day and age, when games cost, on average, $60. In an age where the internet is accessible by a little rectangular thing in your pocket. We all choose to buy games based on professional reviews. Whenever we want to buy a game, we look at the various websites online to look what the game’s score is. If the game receives poor reviews, we don’t buy it. However, some ‘bad’ games are incredibly fun to play. Even Sam Marshall, a fellow writer on Gamer Laughs, spends most of his time playing genuinely appalling games when he could easily play ‘good’ games.

Let me give you an example. One of my favourite games back on the PlayStation 2, Ghost Rider, received dismal reviews. On average, it’s score barely reached 4/10. It is, by definition, a bad game. I didn’t know that back then, so I bought it. I went to the store, paid for it, took it home and loved it. I had no idea I was playing a ‘bad’ game. To me, the game was very much an enjoyable one. Thinking about it now, it wasn’t really the game’s graphics or gameplay or story that pulled me in. It was the charm of it as a package. It all came together to create this experience of charging through hell as the Rider himself. I loved it, I still do.

Just imagine how many charming games we’ve let pass us by because of our dependence on online reviews. I’m not saying reviews are bad. I’m just saying they don’t tell the whole story. So next time you look up a review online, be sure to look at some other things as well. Look for some more detailed information on the game. Watch some gameplay footage if possible. You never know what you might be missing out on by ignoring a supposedly “bad” game.

I pay more attention to what my peers say as I value their opinions. I have often enjoyed games and movies that critics hated.
