NO MAN’S SKY, THE HILARIOUS TRUTH

No Man’s Sky is an upcoming space sim and sort of MMO from Hello Games, on the surface the concept is brilliant and the graphics looks suburb, I just have a few worries for how the internet is going to twist this games immersive atmosphere.

Now I’m sure you have heard that No Man’s Sky is going to have an infinite amount of planets with an all unique ecosystem and endless possibilities for the appearance of the wildlife, now while this is not far off the truth it’s not quite what’s happening for the final release.

Technically there are 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets to explore and only 10% of them estimated will have a habitable environment for creatures to live on, so most of the time any new planet you find will either be a barren wasteland or a Popsicle.

The other thing is that the universe is so large that the likelihood of you and your best mate meeting up somewhere for space burgers is next to nothing, so trying to play this game with friends is going to get old fast.

But should have happen to find the perfect earth like planet just far away enough from its nearest sun, and there is new creatures no one has ever come across you are given the opportunity to name the planet and the creatures on your own accord, I can’t be the only one thinking this is going to be a hilarious feature.

Now there is going to be those hardcore sci-fi fans who name their discovery after the actor of Luke Sky Walkers 5th cousin combined with an actual planet that resembles their namesake or someone who names the planet after their first or last name but, what does one name their newly found set of creatures and a huge land mass.

Am I going to be cruising around in my high tech asteroid zapper of a ship, to stumble onto a planet called “Hitler was a nice guy” with all the creatures on it with creative names involving common curse words? There is always the possibility! The other thing that is going to be interesting, is that the creatures themselves are all procedurally generated, so using hundreds of set templates they essentially become a mix and match of different creatures along with changes to suit their habitat to make a new and unique species.

Now in my opinion, I guess the developers have probably selectively showcased the kind of wildlife found on these planets, but with all these 18 quintillion planets to visit, a fair number of them are probably going to contain ungodly creatures that looks like you dragged a wolf and a chicken through a blender and attempted to stitch it back together with glue.

Oh and even the noises they make are rendered through a program they developed to simulate the size and diameter and length of their throats in order to create a sound that they would naturally make if they existed.

So I’m going to give a pat on the back to the poor fellow who discovers an animal with a giraffe neck and a bird’s beak that screams like a child whose parents left him alone in a Shopping Centre; Oh and did they happen to mention in the trailer that some animals can and will attack you? This is going to cause madness when that lanky legged tiger begins running at you, full speed.

Now I am in no way trying to put down this game or turn you away from it, trust me you would know, No Man’s Sky is going to have me glued to my office chair discovering planets and making horrible references to movies out of them.

Even the music is generated using algorithms based on your location in the world, I’m not sure how far this procedural effect spans or how much the tracks differ but I’m interested at the least.

Initially this game was built by a group of only four people, and at some point in 2014 their whole office was flooded and it crippled the teams spirit and current workload, but here we are in 2016 and expecting it to release in June, just around the corner.

What a time to be alive, I can’t wait to see how many bad space puns the internet can come up with.

I thought it would of been prudent to talk about the game mechanics and how you travel without load from planet surface to space and back to another planet without a pause for tea. Or mabe how its going to open a new era for game development base on algorithm’s to make what would otherwise be irrational development time that would delay the release up by an near infinite amount of time.
