The Guest Review
Have you ever stared at a math equation or a tax return paper for ages wondering how in the world you were going to figure it out, well that’s literally the main exhibit of this new title The Guest by Team Gotham and published by 505 Games, but don’t get me wrong it’s a particularly rewarding and enjoyable title.
Now like every game I play for the sake of reviewing, I do little to no research on them to keep the experience pure and non-bias as possible (and because I’m lazy and just want to dive straight in) which usually means I can and did take this game in the wrong light. I played through most of the game with the fear of dying so I’m pretty sure I missed most of the amazing story and skipped a lot of the amazing graphics.
Had I have realized this was another “escape the room” without any jump scares I would have been a little bit more relaxed. I have played a fair few puzzle/adventure games in my life time but The Guest has got the be one of the best, however be warned have a notepad and a pen on hand because you will need them.
Initially the puzzles are simple and I flew through them as my sister wrote down anything of importance for later, gradually I felt like the mystery surrounding the game’s setting became even more and more mysterious and then suddenly the puzzles went from middle school level to finding out who the zodiac killer is.
Before I get ahead of myself though, you’re thrown into a hotel room supposedly on a trip for your “science” and things go downhill from there, when you awake you find your actual doorknob is gone and there is a knocking coming from outside your room, what would you do ?
The graphical detail was fantastic, I felt like this game would be amazing with VR, the lighting and shadows really shined, even the audio kept you on your tip toes as you progress through the creepy level areas. The only problem I think I had was the FPS (Frames per second) which actually for some reason I suffered when I started up the game; I had to lower my graphical quality for the sake of my gameplay. I don’t know if it was just my type of graphics card or just the game was terribly optimized, I’m not sure, but I do know that generally for the size of the game I really did not expect such bad performance (I mean I can literally run just cause 3 lmao).
If you like difficult puzzles and creepy atmosphere and beautiful (laggy) graphics then I highly recommend this game, otherwise if you’re not so good at problem solving, you can either google a walkthrough or avoid this title. I had a lot of fun playing The Guest, beside it’s minor flaws, and It left me wanting a sequel to be honest a the end game still left many questions.
7/10
