An eclectic mix of five upcoming or fresh gaming tech gadgets.
This year is a big one for gaming. With the launch of VR, announcements of Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, and constant leaks on Sony’s PS4.5 Neo, we have a lot to be excited for as gamers. Not to mention Nintendo’s NX. Unfortunately, Project Scorpio and the NX won’t release until next year and the Neo has only been confirmed with no solid details on what it will be exactly. So until we get the full wrap on what the big three are doing, here’s five random pieces of gaming tech you can get now or later this year.
PlayStation VR
With this year tentatively being called “The year of VR” I think it’s fitting to start with one of the most anticipated Gaming Gadgets of this year: PlayStation VR. There are a lot of questions still surrounding PSVR that have yet to be fully answered. Most of which revolves around visual fidelity and quality of titles. Not to mention the fact that to use the PlayStation VR you need the PlayStation eye that launched with the PS4 and Move controllers for true immersion. On the plus side, Sony claims to have around 50 titles that will be available in the launch window (2016). Sure these games have big names attached to them like Star Wars or Rocksteady’s version of Batman but footage of gameplay is sparse and what gameplay footage there is mostly seems like glorified tech demos. All negativity aside, it’s hard not to be excited about a decently priced VR option for the console oriented gamer, and with all the games they are pushing out, at least a few are bound to be worthy of your time in the VR space. Luckily, we won’t have to wait to long to find out, PlayStation VR launches on October 13 to the price of $399 for just the headset and $499 for the headset, Move controllers, and PlayStation eye.
Nintendo Mini
Not to be outdone by Sony or Microsoft, Nintendo has decided to release their own smaller redesigned console; The Nintendo Mini. As a smaller plug and play console, the Nintendo Mini, is almost guaranteed to be a big hit when it releases on November 11th. It appeals to both classic gamers who want to relive the simple days of gaming and modern gamers who want to get a look at what laid the foundation for what we know as video games. With over 30 games, some of which are considered to be the greatest games of all time (Metroid WOO!!!), classic NES controllers that also work with the Wii U, and HD output, all at the price of a Modern game ($59.99), this is a must buy for gaming enthusiasts. I know I’m personally buying one. Not for my love of the NES but for my love of the SNES. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I have expectations of a Mini SNES if the Mini NES sells well. That’s not to say I won’t enjoy the NES Mini, I just really want to play an authorized version of Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country with a SNES controller. Oh and Super Mario World… and Yoshi’s Island… and Mortal Kombat… and A link to the Past. Super Nintendo Mini coming soon. No wait, Nintendo Mini coming soon.
Nvidia Titan X
Next up is the newest generation of the Nvidia Titan X graphics card. Running on Pascal based GPU made up of 12 billion transistors and outfitted with 3,548 active CUDA cores this graphics card is a beast. Throw in 12 GB of of GDDR5X of memory and you will be set for a long time. What does all of this mean? To be frank; i’m not 100 percent sure what all these specs mean but i do know that if you spend the grand or so to buy this card you are going to be able to play pretty much anything on the highest graphical settings. I’m talking the ability to see pores on people’s faces. If you thought Doom looked good on your current set up just imagine it in 4k glory. It also has more than enough power to allow you to play VR on the highest of settings. Basically if you have a computer that can fully utilize this card , and wallet to afford it, this is your best choice. Well, will be, since a release date has yet to be announced.
Pokemon Go Plus
Of course something about Pokemon Go was going to be on this list! It’s practically mandatory in all gaming circles at this point. Essentially what this little bracelet device does is remove your phone from the Pokemon go experience. It connects via Bluetooth to your phone and allows you to catch Pokemon by just clicking a button. It will also vibrate to let you know when you are near a Pokestop so you can search for all the Pokegoodies. So if you ever thought “I wish there was a way i could take out everything that makes this game fun and interesting” then this is for you! Having said that, I think this thing will sell quite well. If for no other reason than a way to play Pokemon go while being in social situations. Just imagine your in the middle of a family dinner and all of a sudden your Pokemon Go Plus starts vibrating and lighting up. Could it be a Electrobuzz? Maybe it’s a Hypno? There’s only one way to find out. You press the button and the LED signals to you that the Pokemon is yours. Forget social norms, you pull out your phone to check what Pokemon you just caught, expecting something great, but as is always the case it’s just another stupid Pidgey! Now your mom is upset because you never spend time with her and when you do you are always catching Pokemon and your brother is upset because his food is under-cooked, all because you wanted a Hypno. Anyways, Pokemon Go Plus coming in September.
Moto Z and Z Force
Yes I put a phone on this list. Lets face it, Mobile gaming is here to stay and while there are definitely a lot of crappy cash grabbing games there are also some really great games on both the Play Store and iOS store. The reason why the Moto Z and Z Force are on this list is it’s modular capabilities. It’s less modular and more adding things to the device via a small connector on the back and using magnets to hold the “mods” in place. The ability to add to the phone opens it up to a lot of possibilities. Perhaps a decent controller mod? Maybe even a mod to connect an Xbox or PlayStation controller. Sure this isn’t currently available but Lenovo is offering development kits for anyone who wants to create mods. So it’s just a matter of time before someone does something interesting on the gaming side. In the meantime, there is a battery mod that is available to increase your battery life tremendously and extend your mobile gaming well into the night. Okay, so maybe this one isn’t exactly gaming tech but the potential this phone has is exciting. Lenovo has also said you can use mods on future phones, so for those of you who decide to get this phone can carry hypothetical gaming mods into the future, provided you stay in the Moto family. The phones on there own are pretty beastly even without the mods so you should have no trouble playing Pokemon Go or any other mobile games. These phones are already available to all Verizon customers in the US and Unlocked versions are scheduled for the rest of the world in late August or early September.
So that’s my list. Good? Bad? The guy with the gun? Know any pieces of good gaming tech I missed? Let me know the answer to all these questions and more in the comments.
