Five video game franchises that don’t need the Pokemon Go treatment, but should get it anyway.
By now you have all heard and are probably apart of the biggest gaming phenomenon since the original Wii; Pokemon Go. Since the game has taken over the world I have been asking myself what other gaming franchises would work well in the same format. I didn’t come up with anything that would actually be safe or fun but i wanted to make a list so, without further ado i give you the top five gaming franchises that don’t need the Pokemon go treatment but should get it anyway.
The Last Of Us
You’re probably asking yourself how, but what you should be asking yourself is why. Why would you want to play a mobile AR game set in the world of The Last Of Us? Two words: Clickers and crafting. Yes, this would be a good name for a post apocalyptic survival guide but that’s beside the point. What I’m getting at, is sneaking around clickers while holding your phone out to both listen and look for clickers. In case you forgot, clickers are the deaf, overgrown fungus creatures that have a mushroom for a face. Just imagine sneaking around your work trying to be quiet, while your phone makes erratic clicking noises, freaking out that new guy George. But don’t worry about him, you know he deserves it. Actually, he may think you have a bomb in your phone which probably would end in a bomb squad showing up at your work. Besides getting on the No Fly list, you could also scavenge random junk from real life using your camera. You could use these parts to create bombs and traps to even the playing field against those virtual Clickers, or virtually blow up your cat next time he jumps on the counter. Ball is in your court Naughty Dog.
Metal Gear Solid
Since Konami is basically the worst thing in gaming right now, it’s right up their alley to create a knock off using Metal Gear. Using your device’s GPS, this mobile app will lead you to real world locations in order to collect Golden Boxes scattered throughout the world. The sneaking is applied via real life guards, because this app is going to lead you to off limit locales such as Military bases, Government buildings, and North Korea to find those precious golden boxes. Just don’t get caught because Konami is not responsible for the real life repercussions you will most certainly face when the servers go down and leave you at Area 51 with no excuse. You can also find virtual guards to Fulton and build up your virtual base. This would be important because other people could attack your base and steal your precious golden boxes while you’re not online, leaving you at the mercy of the insurance you bought via micro-transactions. The game would also include several lengthy cut-scenes about nano-machines and a smoking monkey who drinks soda and manages the micro-transaction store.
Forza Motorsport
This is kind of a weird one right? Well dig this; With this app you could take pictures of real life sports cars and unlock said cars in the game. You would also be able to race virtual cars with your real life car by simply holding your phone in one hand while driving. By moving the phone around while you’re driving, you could see your virtual competitor racing alongside you until you inevitably crash into a tree. But don’t worry! Forza has you covered. You will be able to virtually repair your car using your camera and the power of augmented reality. In fact you can make your car even better. Sure it won’t be real but it will still look super rad!
The Witcher
You can probably guess this one by now. Using (yep you guessed it) your camera, you would track down wild beasts to kill by launching your Witcher senses through a button on the screen. This would activate a black and white camera filter and highlight things of interest in red. The kicker here is; it will also highlight random real life people in red and signal them as enemies. The next logical step is to virtually attack them using the Witcher signs. Remember George? Set him on virtual fire with Igni. Stephen in accounting stealing your lunch? Set up a Yrden trap, hide behind the fake tree in the corner and watch the show. I forgot where exactly i was going with this but you get my idea. Oh, also there is a virtual Roach who will randomly appear when you open your phone. On a more serious note, it could also include an AR version of Gwent. It would work much like that game for the PlayStation Eye called Eye Of Judgement, except good.
Overwatch
Look, I’m not gonna lie to you, I ran out of ideas and this is the first game I could think of. But, after a few minutes of deep cerebral thinking I came up with some ingenious ideas. I don’t think I have to tell you how the game incorporates your phone or tablet at this point, but you could use your device to transport real life vehicles to a specific points in the real world. Most of the vehicle’s will be run down and sitting in junkyards but that’s when AR comes into play. After your phone recognizes said car it will then require you to slowly move the, now virtual, car to the destination. Team play comes into to play (pun very much intended) much in the same way it does in the real game. You will role play your favorite Overwatch Heroes with the same abilities, except this time you see the effects in real life via the camera on your device. If you thought you looked dumb playing Pokemon go, just wait until the general public sees you wandering around random streets yelling at your teammates to “take out that f*cking bastion” or “why do we have three McCrees and no support!” It will be just like the real game!
Okay, so these are all terrible ideas, but that’s what you get when you force mobile AR features into a game not meant to have them. Do you have any ideas for a mobile AR game based on a gaming franchise? Post your best ideas, good or bad, below.
