Lords of the Fallen, iOS Review

If you’ve played Infinity Blade, you’ve played Lords of the Fallen.

Lords of the Fallen is a beat ’em style game that takes you from fight to fight using one of three different types of characters, a warrior, rogue and cleric.

You take your choice through multiple battles in a bid to defeat the final boss, all the while upgrading your gear and abilities through a currency system and of course there are in app purchases

There is absolutely no reason to spend a penny more than what you did buying Lords of the Fallen, if you decide to buy…

Gameplay

I wanted to say the gameplay is pants but, truthfully, it’s quite addicitve once you get into it. Perhaps that’s because I’ve always been a sucker for earning fresh new armour. You fight through a series of enemies with screen taps and swipes, whether that be dodging, parrying or blocking. However, it is far from original. The famous Infinity Blade had this nailed since it’s original release over 6 years ago so this just feels like a bit of a rip off, an expensive one at that.

Attacking consists of spells and sword swipes. Oddly, dodge 3 times and the enemy is stunned, leaving themselves open to a few attacks from one of your characters’ combos.

Once you get the hang of it, the fights can become monotonous and the gear can become unnecessary. This turned the game into a bit of a grind. However, I still completed it without having to push myself.

Graphics

As far as iOS games go, the graphics are mint, extremely detailed and enjoyable to look at. The problem being the animation which feels quite lazy. The fights themselves are fluid enough to enjoy but finishing the fight just feels daft as your swinging your daggers at thin air. The celebrations then feel slightly cut short and the transition between each fight seems extremely clunky, often jumping from one fight to the next instantly.

Controls

The controls have some major problems, problems that pissed me off many times. It’s somply, swipe or hit the middle button. When they work it’s quite responsive, but when they don’t… well it feels like Lords of the Fallen just likes to guess which button your pressed and give you a random action. More times than enough I clicked dodge right and she moved left or vice versa. I was playing on an iPad so it’s quite impossible to get one side of the screen confused with the other.

Blocking isn’t a bad option but I found dodging simpler as I like to hold the iPad in two hands and click the sides with my thumbs. I became far too proficient at it, to the point where I wasn’t getting hit and fights became irritatingly long.

Cost

$10 – ouch. Is it worth it? Nope, not even close. I find it quite cheeky actually as the graphics seem to be recycled from the desktop version of the game. $10 on the app store should be reserved for the best of the best and Lord of the Fallen just isn’t quite there.

On top of this, they also have micro-transactions which I find to be a massive slap in the face to anyone that bought it. It’s taking the piss to be quite honest.

Conclusion

If you have money to burn then go ahead and enjoy yourself. You will enjoy it whilst it lasts, which was a few hours for me. It just isn’t worth the price though. Graphics are great but lazy and the entire game feels like the first 5 mins.

Adventure and RPG fan, I'm still waiting for a game to rival Baldur's Gate. Apart from working on the site, I'm a full time geek that occasionally likes to look out the window.
