Project Zomboid Review
If You’re Bit. You’re Dead!
Project Zomboid is one my most played games on Steam, as well as my favourite. Developed by Indie Stone and with over 200 hours on the game and it being in beta right now the game has unlimited potential. Project Zomboid is a zombie hardcore survival game, I say hardcore because it has something not many other games have, A ZOMBIE VIRUS. Unlike a lot of zombie survival games if you get bitten in Project Zomboid, you are dead. You will have around 2 in-game days to say goodbye to your favourite axe and your water collection as well as that huge food supply then drop dead from the high fever.
The map is quite nicely sized with 2 main cities that you can choose to spawn in with a highway that connects them so once a certain area has been fully looted then you can move town. There is a lot of realism in PZ that many games over look, the biting being one main thing. You have to burn zombie corpses near your base as if you are in an area where they linger you can get sick from the decomposition.
There is a bunch of mechanics that you have access to and I’m so hooked on this game I’m keeping up to date with the development blogs (which are weekly Mondoids) i love the pun. I don’t want to share everything because finding out everything you can do in this is the best part, so I’ll let you know whats upcoming. NPC survivors are something that have been in the works for ages and were in the pre-alpha but due to what was basically a re-work of the whole game they had to take them out. Metalworking will be introduced so you can make metal spears and many other weapons and items. There is going to be an animation overhaul with risk of falling over fences when vaulting over them. there is a lot more to come and I cannot wait, even when you play extensively and get burned out each new update adds so much it’s worth going back to. Mod support also makes this game endless and always being built upon.
I suggest you check out their website for more information on the mechanics and features because I have to talk about the looks of this game. Yes this isn’t some Unreal 4 masterpiece but the aesthetic and art style really gives off that ‘your alone in a zombie filled world’ vibe but not in a sense that it’s like Left 4 Dead and you can just saw your way through a hoard. Project Zomboid makes you question whether it’s worth killing 1 zombie in the middle of the street since you have to worry about the hearing, sight and smell these zombies have.
As well as the hardcore zombie experience you are bound to get with Project Zomboid, there is also a sandbox mode, This let’s you customize everything. Literally. You can edit the world climate, start date, resource abundance and the zombies. The amount of them, their hearing, sight, smell. You can change the transmission, is a bite going to infect you? Or are we all infected to begin with Walking Dead style or are you the special one. The Immune. Of course this means you can also make bloodhound, eagle sight zombies that know how a door works as well if your crazy because at that point they are human. There is also a creative mode in the works that lets you build your own city to then survive in. I will be making the prison from Walking Dead and yes I will make Woodbury.
In conclusion Project Zomboid is the best zombie survival game out there if you’re looking for the realistic survival. With multiplayer it’s basically Walking Dead online, you can be the heroic Rick Grimes or the evil Negan. The world is your oyster, just don’t get bit. Get bit you die.
