Rebel Galaxy Review

Despite not being a AAA game, Rebel Galaxy is a decent title! Rebel Galaxy is like a cross between Rage and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. The kicker is that the whole game takes place on your very own space ship. Space ship, space ship, space ship!!! Oh, ahem sorry for that. Now, where was I…….ah yes Rebel Galaxy plays like Rage in a way of missions and bounties. Even the way the NPC’s speak kind of feels like Rage. The Black Flag game play comes from the ship battles that you get to engage in, the handling of the space ship is much like the boat battles. You just can’t help getting into space fights with Rebel Galaxy!

The story feels a little weak and hoaky at times, but fortunately this does not take away much from the game itself! You start right off flying your very own spaceship left behind by your missing aunt. You take a trip to a dangerous galaxy full of some unsavory characters, who ironically are friends with your aunt. Upon meeting one of these friends of your missing aunt, you get swept up into a series of inner galaxy battles and mysteries. You will find some characters faces regurgitated time and time again, I guess the developers think criminals all look the same. Oh, not you again! The dialog is bland and painfully obvious at times. I digress, this was not a kill switch for the game. I found it kind of funny mostly, like rewatching an old favorite movie.

Game play is where Rebel Galaxy does well, I personally believe! The idea of fighting in space can feel a little daunting, but Rebel Galaxy handles this by leveling the field. You are able to move the ship 360 degrees physically and your camera can do the same. The camera can also move slightly up or down giving you the chance to track enemies during a dog fight. Flying through space is completely open and fully controllable. You are able to stop completely or go full out in warp, making it easy to get to missions and space stations. The space stations are a place to stock up on save your game, get supplies, upgrade your ship, purchase new ships, sell supplies, or get bounties. Your very first stop is in fact a spacestation allowing you to get a feel for how to play Rebel Galaxy. The in game tutorial is simplistic allowing you to just jump right in a play. There is a map showing you where to go for each missions both on a actual map and on a hud at the bottom of your screen. As you progress through the game you can upgrade various components of your ship or go as far as to purchasing a new ship altogether then upgrading that one to your hearts desire. The ships have their own pros and cons, making you decide how you want to play the game. Upgrades are the same way, the weapons also have their own sets of attributes depending on how you like to battle. All of this makes playing the game fun and unique to your own style of game play.

Another thing I really enjoyed about Rebel Galaxy is the in game music. It has a metal style western feel to it which really fits the games atmosphere. I would recommend when playing to wear a good set of headphones for this title. You will find yourself enjoying the space traveling parts of Rebel Galaxy that much more! One thing to listen for is the time in between music tracks during the silent parts. You can here a very faint erie melody playing while the roar of your ships engines push you further out into space. You are given this sense of loneliness flying around in the dead silence of space. All the while you can hear the faint sound of music playing from the deep reaches of the stars.

The look of the game is rustic much like Rage, like you are entering into a world that has been beaten down. Yet, it isn’t quite broken. A believable world for the story Rebel Galaxy is trying to tell. The ships and the space stations all look worn from years of hard use. The characters look cartoonish, much like a little game called Borderlands, which fits the motif of the game.

All and all I loved Rebel Galaxy, it’s a game I can see myself keep going back to play. It’s quick to start up to play and the missions run fast. The better the upgraded ship the faster it is to complete a mission. It doesn’t even take long to aquire upgrades since the bounty boards at the space stations tend to always have posts. The story leaves a little wanting, but the quick pace game play makes you all but forget the story. I found myself jumping to space station to space station collecting bounties to earn credits. Then use those credits to upgrade my favorite ship to full capacity. Patrolling the galaxy in my upgraded warship feeling like a badass! What is not to love! Not to mention the great music to accompany my onslaught of rebel factions. Laying waste to ship after ship and then picking up the floating cargo left in the debri.
