The Greatest Genre, the RPG
The ability to mould your life into whatever you choose in an unrestricted world is a blessing to us all, but, what if you could customise yourself without the literal risk? This is where RPGs make a wonderful appearance. Back in the 1980s, video game versions of Role Playing began to emerge in series such as Final Fantasy, giving us the option to customise characters appearances, strengths, and temperaments. Fast forward 30 years and well…it’s generally the same in a lot of cases; the core elements stay the same, with updates being made to mechanics and graphics while contributing more lore to the world.
One of the clearest examples of this is the development of the Elder Scrolls series at the time. In the latest instalments we can see the perspective and features such as Magika have stayed remained whilst adding additional game play mechanics. We can dispute whether or not those new features are needed or even helpful, but the fact they’re even added with concern to the continuity of the game is respectable. This is one of the reasons as to why RPGs are my favourite genre, they tend to follow a saga which has the courage to switch up game play mechanics but sharp enough to generally stay the same in important, lore friendly ways.
What’s great about RPGs is that they usually have a few layers to their game play too, you’d be hard pressed (especially with ones veering towards open world) to find an RPGs which doesn’t have elements of puzzles, combat, exploration and stealth. This adds even more freedom to the game play of RPGs and can even make you switch up tactics rather than sticking to patterns or exploiting certain weaknesses or bugs.
All in all, I can accept that there are some poorly made games of this genre, but I love them at the core and the intrinsic freedom to customise your character moreover than just hair and eye colour. A lot of these games are starting to introduce choice and dialogue systems into the games which extend the freedom and replayability greatly. I like to think these games can be an extension of yourself, and ones which actively embrace that are an absolute gem to play.
