Trailers of the Week

Aren’t trailers just the best thing ever? After the actual product, of course, but I can’t be the only one that finds trailers (both reveal and official) to be the most adrenaline-pumping, nerdgasm-influecing, hype-machines that we Geeks can experience. I at least think so, and that is the reason why I am starting up a new weekly series, simply titled “Trailers of the Week”. Every week I will take a look at the biggest trailers that have been released to the depths of suffering and depression that is the internet. Luckily, this week is the week of San Diego Comic-Con, so many trailers have been shown for TV shows and Movies, and Video Games.

1. Batman: The Telltale Series – Episode 1: Realm of Shadows

First off, we have the first trailer for the highly-anticipated Batman game, brought to us by the story-telling geniuses over at Telltale (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Tales From The Borderlands), and we finally get to see what the gameplay will look like; it keeps the cell-shaded art style that Telltale use in their other games, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. The trailer reveals that the story will equally, if not more (like it has been rumoured), focus on playing and making choices as Bruce Wayne, than the Batman. The story features characters such as Harvey Dent who is currently running for Mayor of Gotham (and seems a bit Two-Faced if you ask me), Vicki Vale (Bruce Wayne’s love-interest in the comics and some of the films), Alfred and Commissioner Jim Gordon, and Don Falcone (who will be the main antagonist of the series, or at least the first episode), along with quick appearances from Catwoman, and a very informed Hobo warning Bruce of a coming gang-War. In Batman: The Telltale Series, you as Bruce Wayne will delve into the dark underworld of Gotham, when coming into contact with Don Falcone (the big mob boss of the city of Batman). Based on your decisions as Bruce, to ally with Falcone to help Harvey Dent’s Mayoral campaign or to cause Dent’s run to crumble, will effect what happens when you throw on the cape and cowl, and prowl the nights as The Batman as you try and take down Falcone and his Mob lackeys.

Realm of Shadows will be available for download on the 2nd of August, yippee!

2. American Gods

For a long time now, a TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods has been in development, and now we can finally see what the series will look like. We see that the main character Shadow Moon, played by Ricky Whittle (The 100), has been released from prison along with the news that his wife has died during his sentence. On his journey home, after the funeral, he meets a man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday, played by the amazing Ian McShane (Deadwood), who hires Moon as a bodyguard. What first appears as an ordinary bodyguard gig for a strange con-man, soon is revealed to be a role in helping Wednesday, who is revealed to be an incarnation of Odin, the Norse All-Father, recruit other “old” gods for the mighty on-coming war between the Old Gods, and the new American Gods (which reflect America’s obsessions with media, celebrity, technology, and drugs, among other things). I am a big fan of the original novel, so I am really happy that this epic tale of man and myth is being brought to life, with such a great cast (Whittle and McShane are joined by the likes of Peter Stormare, Gillian Anderson and Pablo Schreiber).

American Gods comes out next year 2017.

3. Wonder Woman

Here we go. The first trailer for the fourth instalment for the DC Cinematic Universe has finally arrived, and it looks beautiful (and I’m not just talking about Gal Gadot wink wink). The trailer reveals that the story will centre on the classic origin of Princess Diana of the Amazons (so this is set before all the other films), in which she comes across a washed-up Pilot on the shores of Themyscira, the legendary Amazonian island (where no male has ever set foot). The man turns out to be Steve Trevor, a pilot for the American Army during World War II. Steve returns to America, along with Diana, and she begins helping the Allies in the war, along with her own objectives in mind. Soon, however, the war spills into the world of Themyscira and Diana must return to her home and fight and epic battle. This film is being titled, by the negative ninnies of the world as the “Captain America: The First Avenger” of the DCCU series, which is understandable, but it does look like it could be very entertaining and action-packed. Along with that electric guitar track, that was also in Batman v Superman, which is awesome.

Wonder Woman comes to cinemas March 2017

4. Kong: Skull Island

We got to see the first trailer for Kong: Skull Island, the new reboot of the series which will factor into the shared universe between Kong and Godzilla, which will lead up to a glorious clash of the giants with King Kong v Godzilla. This film’s bright colour scheme is gorgeous and makes all the colours pop, especially the shot from the helicopter which shows Kong’s feet (bellissimo). The film features a star-studded cast (Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, Toby Kebbell and John Goodman) travelling to a mysterious Island for a “survey” job, however some of the visitors know more than they let on, and soon the adventure of a lifetime quickly turns into the struggle for survival against the native Tribesmen, Giant Spiders, and the 8th wonder of the world himself, Kong. The biggest Kong in cinema history actually. Which makes sense, since he’s supposed to face-off against Gojira (no, not the band), and the King of Monsters was bloody huge. I am very excited for this film, especially after seeing this trailer, I loved the Peter Jackson film with Jack Black and Andy Serkis, but I understand where people are coming from when they moan about “another Kong reboot”. But hey, we need a giant gorilla in our lives, and we are not gonna see a Mighty Joe Young reboot anytime soon.

Kong comes to cinemas March 2017

5. Walking Dead Season 7

Must. Have. Need. Now. There’s not much to see from this trailer, it doesn’t really give us much information on the story of season 7 (though it will obviously loosely follow the comics), which is understandable because of the shocking finale of season 6, so AMC can’t give us anything that will remotely show us what happened to any of those characters. What we do get are flashbacks of characters from throughout the show, then we get shown that Negan and The Saviours have taken over Alexandria. We also get a few shots of some of The Kingdom faction fighting Walkers. All building up to the final reveal of King Ezekiel, and his pet tiger Shiva, oh my god, I want this now. Nothing really annoyed me from this trailer, I understand that they can’t show anything to do with any of the potential victims of Negan’s punishment, and so what we got was still satisfying. Though the TV Version of Ezekiel looks a lot younger than his Comic version.

Walking Dead returns this October.

6. Justice League

Finally we have the first trailer for Justice League, the first ensemble movie for the DCCU (if you don’t count BvS as an ensemble movie, I don’t count it as a movie). The footage takes place in a selected few scenes due to the simple fact that the principle photography (the actual filming) hasn’t finished yet, so there are only a small amount of scenes that are finished and ready for showing. The trailer quickly reveals Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, and reveals that Bruce Wayne (played by Ben Affleck) has been searching for heroes to recruit for a team to fight a coming threat, which has been previously confirmed to be Steppenwolf, a general of Darkseid, who is searching for The Mother Boxes. The trailer shows off the charming personality of Barry Allen (who has been rumoured to play a major role in this film), and shows the humorous tone of the film that we can expect.

There is currently no release date confirmed for Justice League, at the time of writing this article.
