We Happy Few Preview – First Impressions
“Happy is the country with no past”
Don’t you just hate being happy?
We Happy Few is something everyone should know about by now, especially if you watched E3 2016. If you don’t know what it is, come out from under your rock and embrace this wonderful new title. Developed by Compulsion Games, We Happy Few is a Survival game that takes place in a city called Wellington Wells, the game is set in the 1960’s and is super creepy.
We Happy Few takes place in an alternate reality of 1960’s England where everyone takes Joy pills to forget their horrible past. Since the game is a survival, there is a bunch of crafting and management with hunger, sleep, thirst, and sickness. There are a bunch of quests to do in this procedural generated map. You start off in the ruined outskirts of Wellington Wells where many people are ragged and live in ruin or abandoned buildings and since you worked in the main city, and are still wearing your suit (be it ragged) you still get eyed and insulted. There are many events that will happen that trigger quests. These will grant you items and will even help you open up more of the map.
After being told to “Fuck off” about 300 hundred times, you may want to start killing anyone who insults you (or is that just me?). You will come across certain buildings that are there for missions or are important to the backstory. Speaking of story there is isn’t a main one yet. This game is an early alpha for people to get the backstory and the feel of the city and it’s population. One particular member of this population is Uncle Jack. Uncle Jack is the creepy looking guy on the TV’s and audio speakers, he becomes a familiar face and adds so much to the story. He’s actually my favourite part of the game.
Once you make it into the main parts of the city, where the happy creeps are, it turns into a completely different game. You need to blend in and not look shady and you may even need to take a Joy every so often to avoid suspicion. With Tesla turrets ready to fire on any downers and police always nearby, the game becomes very hard. I will admit I didn’t get much time in the city as I went in off my Joy and was chased for ages and got vaporised by a turret. Really fun though!
The backstory has been super interesting so far and I cannot wait to see what else will come of this game until release. I highly recommend We Happy Few and I expect to put many more hours into it. For an early access game, I’ve hardly ran into many bugs, which is always good. The game currently has enough content and there is even more to come which makes it completely worth the price for this amazing title.
