Xcom 2 Long War 2: Should it have been paid DLC?
Xcom 2 released just over a year ago now and we recently got to see the new addition to what made Xcom Enemy Unknown so good. Long War. Long War is a mod that makes Xcom’s story, you guessed it, longer but also harder. The increase in challenge was what we all wanted. Most people will know that even if you can’t beat Xcom on a easy difficulty you’re still going to get Long War because it is so much more fun. In Long War for Xcom Enemy Unknown/Within there were new items and entirely new alien AI and mechanics for how they work. It was the expansion we all wanted instead of what Enemy Within gave us. And the same goes for Xcom 2 Long War 2 which comes with entirely new gameplay mechanics, aliens, classes. Its a whole new game.
Firaxis and 2K even gave the Long War folks access to the game before it was released and basically endorsed the mod itself. So why didn’t they put a price tag on it? Long War 2 is so good that they could of put a £10, even £20, price tag on it and I highly doubt many people would complain after seeing what the mod offers. 2K and Firaxis were practically working with Long War Studios so payment would’ve been simple in terms of cuts and the Long War development team deserve a nice cut for improving an already amazing game. Probably one of the best squad turn-based strategies to date in fact. With the amount of content in the mod, it actually feels weird that it is a mod because it has so much new stuff. There have been a massive amount of gameplay overhaul mods and other “expansion” sized mods for games like Fallout and Skyrim but they feel like a mod so it is understandable. Long War 2 feels like a expansion pack, something that is professionally made with a massive amount of effort.
I think Long War 2 should of been paid DLC simply for the fact that the guys behind it deserve a reward for doing such a good job with Xcom 2. It is something I know a lot of people will enjoy for a good amount of years until “Xcom 3: Long War 3” comes out. If you are reading this Pavonis, Thank you for doing such an amazing job with Xcom and I personally cannot wait to play your own upcoming game Terra Invicta.
