TOP 10 PLAYSTATION EXCLUSIVES
PlayStation have made their fair share of bad choices when it comes to console exclusives over the last 20 years (sorry Haze and PlayStation All Stars). However, when they get it right, boy do they get it right. Here is a list of the Top 10 PlayStation Exclusives to have come out so far. I am excluding games that have yet to be released – so you won’t be seeing No Man’s Sky or Horizon Zero Dawn – we could make a whole seperate list to talk about those games. I am also excluding games that were console exclusives but available on PC, even though there are some excellent ones there too. Hopefully by the end of this list, you’ll be frantically trying to get your hands on a copy of one of these gems, or ransacking your house on the off chance you find some spare spending money to buy a PlayStation. Lets get to it!
10. The Persona Series
Available on PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita
The Persona series is not only one of the best JRPG series on the market, but also a great starting point for people new to the slightly weird and out there genre. Persona is one of the exceptions where the best way to play it is probably on a PS Vita, however the console versions are still very good. The gameplay is part RPG and part dating sim while plots range from fighting monsters inside a television to hunting shadows at night after school, Buffy style. Who would have thought I would have had to choose between reading, studying, working, dating, hanging with friends and fighting monsters? THERES NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY! Fortunately, each game takes place over the course of a year so you get plenty of days to do all that stuff in, 365 to be exact. If you’re looking for an immersive, fun, 50+ hour game, then Persona has got you covered.
9. inFamous Trilogy
Available on PS3, PS4
Its not often that we get an original superhero game, that isn’t tied to any existing licence or bad movie tie-in. At the time of release in 2009, players had only had access to games like Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis, Catwoman and the notorious Superman 64, not knowing that Rocksteady’s excellent Arkham series was about to begin. Having an original game that let you be a superhuman and was fun? It was almost unheard of. Then along came inFamous. The first two entries to the series see you playing as Cole McGrath, a bike courier turned electric superhuman. The game itself was an open world free roamer set in the fictional Empire City. The games also introduced a Karma system, giving you the ability to be a hero or a villain depending on whether you were a nice guy or a total dick. In 2014, developer Sucker Punch released inFamous Second Son on PS4, bringing all the freedom, chaos and karmic choices from the original games to a new generation. The new protagonist, Deslin Rowe, also had the unique power of absorbing other peoples abilities. This meant that rather than Cole’s single power, Deslin let you control four. Rather than things like super strength or flying, the game puts a new twist on the formula by giving you powers of smoke, neon, concrete and video (Video, I shit you not). If you wanted Prototype to be good and it disappointed you both times, inFamous attempts the same formula, but does it right.
8. Until Dawn
Available on PS4
When this game was first announced, it definitely got people talking, mostly because people thought it would be terrible. After the game released though, people changed their minds almost immediately. Until Dawn is a horror/adventure game that puts you right into the middle of a B-grade slasher film. Helmed by some impressive actors such as Hayden Panettiere (Heroes, Nashville), Brett Dalton (Agents of SHIELD), Rami Malek (Mr Robot) and Peter Stormare (Prison Break, 22 Jump Street) the game does a good job of making you feel like you are in a movie. Finally, instead of screaming at the movie screen to run rather than hide, you can make them run rather than hide! The plot is simple. Eight friends go on vacation for a night to a cabin on a scary mountain, on the same night that two of their friends disappeared exactly a year ago. What could possibly go wrong? This game delivers some truely wonderful jump scares and terrifying moments. It also introduces a system called the Butterfly Effect which, like the actual butterfly effect, will dictate who lives, who dies and what happens based on your decisions in game. You can reach the end with everyone in one piece, or if you’re like me, two will survive.
7. The Ratchet and Clank Trilogies
Available on PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita
Could you imagine if everyones favourite Lombax and robotic companion didn’t make this list? It would be Nefarious!… That was a joke, because one of the characters is called Dr Nefari… you know what, never mind. Play the game then come back and tell me I’m funny. Originally releasing on PS2, Ratchet and Clank brought excellent gameplay, some RPG elements, classic platforming and cast of hilarious characters and beautiful locations. Almost all the games are available on PS3 thanks to a remastered collection of the original PS2 titles (also available on Vita) and are not that hard to get your hands on if you haven’t had the joy of playing these games before. With a movie due out this year, as well as a reboot of the game, Ratchet and Clank is about to come back in a big way. Over 23 million units of the game have been sold with many more to follow after the reboot I’m sure. That many people can’t be wrong.
6. God of War Series
Available on PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita
It wasn’t until God of War came out that PlayStation stopped being perceived as an exclusively ‘family friendly’ console. I mean, I guess you could play this game with your family, but dear old Granny would get messed up hardcore. God of War has seen 7 stand alone titles, 3 Collections, 3 Ports and one Remaster. Clearly people can’t get enough of this series to this day. God of War is well known for its level of brutality and violence through combat, with good puzzle solving, platforming and story elements thrown in for god measure (that was originally a typo but then realised it was an excellent pun. Im keeping it, deal with it). The games have collectively received dozens of game of the year awards, and you will be hard pressed to find a ‘Top PS2 games of all time’ list that doesn’t have at least one, if not more, of these games in the mix. Next time you’re having a bad day, jump over to mythological Greece, watch Kratos rip someones head off with his bare hands and it’ll give life a bit of perspective for you. Thanks for looking out Kratos.
5. The Kingdom Hearts Series
Available on PS2, PS3, PSP
This is the only game on the list that has spinoffs on other platforms, however the core games in the series are exclusive to the PlayStation systems and you couldn’t make this list without them. Kingdom Hearts was originally released in 2002 and since then have captured the imagination of millions of players. Kingdom Hearts is developed by Square Enix, the minds behind Final Fantasy, and blends a JRPG with the Disney Universe. I could only imagine hearing this pitch for the first time, but these elements that are different as day and night blend perfectly. Great care is taken with all the Disney licences, but the games are filled with enough original content and crossover characters such as Cloud from their Final Fantasy universe to keep it fresh. You play as Sora, the wielder of a powerful weapon called the Keyblade. Sora encounters Donald and Goofy on his adventures and the three team up to rescue their friends and save the world. All the worlds. These games take you everywhere, from Tarzan’s Jungle, Aladdin’s Agrabah and Simba’s Pride Rock, to live-action worlds such as Tron and Pirates of the Caribbean, just to name a few. With the third game in the series announced and Disney now owning the rights to Marvel and Star Wars, who knows, maybe a galaxy far far away is closer than we think. This game is for lovers of JRPG’s and Disney fans alike.
4. Journey
Available on PS3, PS4
Journey is perhaps the most unique game on this list. Unlike the other entries, this game keeps it short and sweet, but everything it does it does with style and class. There is no dialogue per say, the game doesn’t even tell you what the purpose is. The game is all about, you guessed it, the journey. The only abilities you have in the game are running, jumping and ‘speaking’ in musical notes. Despite it being basic, you quickly realise that is all you need and any other abilities would clutter up the beautiful design. The visuals in this game are mesmerising, as is the sound design. Without spoiling anything, I will say that the way the game uses multiplayer is some of the most innovative work I’ve seen done in video games. Despite being only 2 hours long, this game definitely should not be missed. It is available both on PS3 and PS4, so whether you are running current or last gen hardware, add this game to your list.
3. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
Available on PS4 (Originals available on PS3)
Brought to you by the developers of classics such as Crash Bandicoot, Naughty Dog really brought it with the Uncharted series on the PS3. Each game in the series builds upon its predecessors, resulting in fun and fast paced gameplay, solid puzzle solving, drop dead gorgeous graphics and characters and a story that feels like its been ripped straight from an Indiana Jones script. Props go out to Nolan North, who brings all the charm and depth to the main character of Nathan Drake, our treasure hunting protagonist. These games received a remaster in 2015 when brought to the PS4, with the single player campaigns from all three original games. Make no mistake, even without the multiplayer (which is now free to play anyway) this is the best way to experience these titles. With Uncharted 4 due for release in May 2016 (If it doesn’t get delayed for a third time) and this supposedly being the last chapter in Nathan’s adventures, do yourself a favour and brush up for what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest games of 2016.
2. Bloodborne
Available on PS4
Bloodborne was created by developers FromSoftware, best known for their notoriously difficult Dark Souls games. Bloodborne does not stray from this formula much at all, in the sense that it is still notoriously difficult. However Bloodborne has its own identity, meaning you don’t feel like your playing just another Souls game. The Victorian Gothic setting was heavily inspired by Dracula and its clear to see from the locations to the enemies. The Dark Souls games were known for their difficulty and combat, and the knowing that if you couldn’t beat a boss, make no excuses, its because you are not good enough. Bloodborne improves on this formula by making the combat fast paced, rather than slow and strategic, also adding hordes of enemies rather than two or three at a time. This game will have you cheering in triumph and throwing your controller from frustration more than any other game on the system. It is also rewarding, beautiful and more exhilarating then most other games on the market. Whether your daunted by the difficulty of Dark Souls and looking for a more accessible entry point, or you blazed through them and just want more, Bloodborne is ideal for all gamers that want a challenge.
Honourable Mentions
Before revealing our top game, here are some honourable mentions that didn’t quite make the list.
Little Big Planet Series
Available on PS3, PS4, PS Vita
This series brought back platforming and user creation in a big way. It even spawned a racing game out of it. This was a juggernaut for Sony and still beloved by big and little kids alike.
Killzone Series
Available on PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita
This did a better job of being PlayStations ‘Halo’ then Haze ever did. Set in a futuristic world with Alien invaders, this first person shooter wonderfully showcased the power behind the hardware it was using at the time.
EyeToy/Singstar Games
Available on PS2, PS3
Before Kinect and Guitar Hero, we had EyeToy and Singstar. These interactive games captured multiple generations of gamers, with many of us still being privy to whipping out our personal karaoke machines once a good night starts to get going. I think we can leave the window cleaning mini games from EyeToy in the cupboard though.
Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls
Available on PS3, PS4
While these are two very different and completely unrelated games, both are from developer Quantic Dream and follow their mission statement for creating a triple A cinematic experience which are full of choices and consequences. I personally love these games and the studio, but despite their stories and new ideas, they were criticised for their reliance on quick-time sequences and quality of the controls.
1. The Last of Us: Remastered
Available on PS4 (Original available on PS3)
You have to play this game. While I could just leave it at that and sleep easy at night, there is so much to praise about this game I definitely won’t. From the creators of the Uncharted series, The Last of Us is a game set in a post-apocalyptic world after a virus has broken out. People infected turned into terrifying, zombie-like monsters, while those that survived sectioned off and buckled in for the long haul. You play as Joel, a hardened veteran of this new world, with a tragic past. You eventually meet Ellie, a teenage girl who is somehow immune to the virus. This is where the story takes place. The storytelling in this game is the star, and everything that surrounds it works towards highlighting that fact. The voice acting from the two leads is phenomenal, never have I felt so emotionally connected to fictional characters before. The graphics are gorgeous, from art style to level design to things like lighting and particle effects. The gameplay is well balanced, tense and edgy while never feeling like a horror game. The remastered edition on PS4 is the definitive way to play this game, with included DLC adding another 3-4 hours of content to the already 20+ hour game. This is a system selling game that truly displays how powerful games have the potential to be and stretch across audiences whether they are gamers or not. I would never condone stealing your friends consoles, but if they have one and you don’t, I would be making some hard decisions about that friendship and whether its worth keeping if I were you.
So there you have it, the top 10 console exclusives for PlayStation. What do you think, would you reorder anything? Are there any beloved games I blatently missed that will make you hate me? If so I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for a weekly Top 10 Lists of gaming goodness.
